Lost vaccination record: what to do

The paper record has no backup. But almost everything it held exists somewhere else — you just need to know who to ask, and in what order.

What you actually lose

A lost health record is not just an object: it is the vaccination history — the proof that a booster is current, which is asked for at kennels, at shows, by some groomers, and for travel. For rabies it matters more still: without proof of validity, revaccination may be imposed, with the waiting period that follows.

The good news: that information is rarely lost, only scattered.

Where to start

1. Your vet. This is the main source. Practices keep a clinical record for every animal: vaccination dates, batch numbers, prescribed treatments, clinical notes. Ask for a duplicate or a certificate — most will do it without difficulty.
2. Any other vets seen. A house move, an emergency on holiday, a referral specialist: each holds a piece. This is the step people skip, and often where the important episodes are.
3. The microchip database. It does not hold the vaccination history, but it re-establishes the animal's identity and your details as keeper — which everything else depends on.
4. Your own paper trail. Invoices, reminder emails from the practice, photographed prescriptions, bank statements: they date the consultations, which helps your vet locate the treatments.

For rabies, be precise

A rabies vaccination is only valid if it is properly documented: identification of the animal, date, batch number, signature and stamp of the vet. A duplicate issued by the vet who gave the injection carries weight. A remembered mention does not.

If you are planning to travel, raise this well in advance: revaccination imposes a waiting period before validity begins, and that period has ruined a lot of departures.

Pet passports and travel documents

Travel documents are official papers distinct from the health record, issued by an authorised vet. If lost, they can be reapplied for — but replacement follows its own rules, and it is best started long before a trip.

Never starting over
