What a dog or a cat really costs per year
The figures you find online vary threefold, and for good reason: they depend on the animal's size, age and health. The only number worth having is your own.
Why averages are useless
A chihuahua in good health and an arthritic great dane belong to no shared average. Size changes everything: the food ration, the dose of every medicine — most are prescribed by weight — the price of an anaesthetic, the cost of boarding.
Age too: both ends of a life are expensive. The first year (neutering, primary vaccination, microchipping) and the last ones (managing a chronic illness) weigh far more than the years in between.
The categories people forget
The big items come to mind on their own. It is the others that skew estimates:
- Food, by far the largest item over time
- Parasite control — spot-ons and wormers, all year round
- Vaccines and the annual check-up
- Insurance, if you have it: taken monthly, it disappears from perception
- Microchipping and keeping the database up to date
- Boarding during holidays: kennels, a sitter, or travel
- Kit and replacement: bedding, leads, litter, a cat tree
- The unexpected, which is not unforeseeable: an accident, a lameness, a skin condition. It is what blows up one year in five.
The classic mistake: thinking in average months
A pet's costs are not regular. They arrive in clumps: the annual visit with its vaccines and wormer on the same day, the box of spot-ons bought for six months, the operation that happens once. An "average monthly budget" is therefore nearly always wrong — too low eleven months out of twelve, far too low on the twelfth.
That is why the right horizon is the year, and the right method a record rather than an estimate.
Is insurance worth it?
This cannot be settled in the abstract, but it can be settled in your own household. Compare the annual premium with what you actually spent over the previous two or three years, allowing for the policy's limits, excess and exclusions. Without those figures the decision is a bet; with them it is a subtraction.
That assumes you have them. Almost nobody does.
